To be Securely held by Grace <3

*A gentle reminder to new visitors…this blog grew out of a weekly email I started sending a number of years ago. Thursdays is their day…so sometimes this post seems a bit funky if you are used to normal looking blog writing. Some of those loyal readers only do the email, so Thursdays blogs flex to them. God bless you however you found your way to this writing <3

It seems like more than a week since I last sent this email out. We made a quick trip to Austin to see John and help him move. So good to have that time together.

We weren’t sure how I would do three days post-surgery, but the doctor had given us a thumb’s up along with encouragement to utilize wheel chairs when I could and elevate the foot whenever practical.

Everything went great, people were so kind and helpful; and thankfully John is so used to his mother embarrassing him that he only mildly distanced himself from us as I used the motorized carts in a couple of stores.

Ok. He completely vanished when the backup signal sounded and I collapsed in fits of giggles over my basket….

IMG_3252

All of this proved harmless and by my one week check up on Tuesday, the only thing that was starting to bother me a bit was how loose the cast bandage around my foot felt.

Since the swelling has gone down, my foot was starting to slide around in the cast and thus the protective shoe felt like it was flopping around.

Apparently this is normal, because the nurse gave it a slight jiggle and said the doctor would be putting an ACE bandage on it when he came in.

After he looked it all over, he unrolled the beige wrap and deftly did some pretty weaving as he continued to chat with me about the trip.

IMG_3214

When he was done, he secured it with the metal tabs and sent me on my way.

I was surprised when I stepped down how secure and comfortable my foot felt.

The only word I could use to describe was ‘swaddled’.

The only mental picture I could come up with was when our grandson, Joel, used to be fussy and how quickly he settled when tightly wrapped in his blanket.

IMG_7450

And the only Scripture that came to mind is the one that says the Lord heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds.

When our hearts are shattered it is a grand thing to know that our God is going to heal us eventually.

But while that healing is happening: what we need to happen, so we can just keep moving forward, is to be held tightly.

The binding stops the bleeding, protects the wound from infection and holds the injury securely SO THAT health and wholeness can be restored.

Whether it is your own heart or a burden for someone else, I pray you would truly know the security that comes from being wrapped tenderly…. in His LOVE <3

When God drives a point home…

IMG_5834

God has been hitting me over the head recently with a repeated theme.

It has to do with idolatry and if He is trying to get your attention on the issue, then I pray the Lord use this to give you yet another thunk from a fellow learner.

You are welcome.

In addition to just about every sermon, podcast and meditation I pick up the last month or so, I am doing the study No Other Gods by Kelly Minter with a friend.

(HIGHLY recommend the study, as in DO IT!!)

So as you might suspect, all of these various sources of teaching have touched on the fact that building an actual wooden, brass, gold or what-have-you statue and bowing down to it is not really the issue for me.

No, the issue is that I have given a measure of devotion to a person, place, idea or thing that should be reserved exclusively for God alone.

Which brings me to the point of today’s post.

I know…you probably thought I had already made my point…but no…here it is…

Today, as I delved further into this study by Kelly AND read my morning devotion from Seasons of the Heart..both women wrote basically the same warning about the heart and mind being led astray from the sincere and focused worship of God alone.

Frances Ridley Havergal wrote in the mid 1800’s and urged Christ followers of her day to not fill their minds with the empty offerings of entertaining writing that would distract but never fill the hungry soul.

IMG_8718

Eat that which is good. Isaiah 55:2; Good, wholesome, delicious food set plentifully before us,and yet we have to be told to eat that which is good and to let rubbish and poison alone! Is it not humiliating? ….How much are we going to eat today in proportion to that which does not satisfy?”

Seasons of the Heart; June 24th, Reformation Heritage Books

A century and a half later, Kelly encourages us with these words:

“Most of us are not choosing friends who are slanderous, self-absorbed, abusive, conceited, and disrespectful, but perhaps these traits are ‘creeping’ (KJV 2 Timothy 3:1-5) into our lives during prime time, at the movies, in our favorite magazine, and on our iPads.”   No Other Gods page 68; Lifeway Press 2007, 2013

IMG_2895

Her study points out that much of what we call “entertainment” is pouring ideologies and deceptions into our heads that will leave our souls hungry.

I don’t watch a lot of TV, rarely see a movie and stay away from fiction novels completely.

But I can feed this starving soul for far longer than I care to admit on the high calorie/low nutrition of social media.

Sure there are some Scripture verses out there…and some great devotions and inspirational writings….(ahem….hello??…Journey Onward??? sorry…couldn’t help it)

but ….if this is my main diet for feeding this lean, idolatry-prone soul???

I am in a heap of trouble.

So the surest cure for idle idolatry?

OPEN. UP. YOUR. BIBLE.

Every word is God-breathed…

YOU

2010 09 04_0534

So belly up to the table, open up a heaping portion of the good food of Scripture and …

TAKE HIM AT HIS WORD <3

What in the world?

IMG_1729

If I am reading the news correctly, among other things…

<3 The vote in Great Britain “won” with a near split decision…cause I’m thinking if you are that close to 50% yes/50% no…that’s a whole lot of people who don’t agree and…

<3 From articles I have looked at, many had to google what it meant AFTER they voted…which I totally get because how on earth can we mere mortals understand the intricacies of world systems???

and

<3 Here on the home front… I am seriously disillusioned by the fact that the winning of a campaign can come down to not raising enough money FOR the campaign…which totally flies in the face of every grade school teacher who stood up in front of our class during the Social Studies hour and told us that in America….ANYONE can be the president.

<3 Okay. I got over that a long time ago…but definitely when I saw the documentary on one campaign where chairs were covertly replaced on the stage for a debate so the candidate would feel comfortable in the chair he had practiced in…help me.

So here is where I land…and yes…this will not be political and will be very random….

IMG_1609

I do not have a clue about how government runs and all the related tie-ins to domestic and foreign policy, the economy, global warming and why children are no longer being taught cursive …

which is highly disturbing on many levels but personally our grandchildren do not stand a prayer of reading my handwriting without some basic knowledge of cursive…

just sayin’

But here is what we can know….

You and I have a sphere of influence today where we can be the hands and feet of Christ.

You can teach your children based on godly principals, not other people’s agendas.

You can teach them to fear the Lord and to do right, and yes…use WORDS and EXAMPLES.

You can show people what Christians do when they don’t understand all the stuff going on around us…

and…more importantly…

what we do when WE mess up.

IMG_8823

Separate the people from the agenda…over and over and over…even if they don’t want to be…you do it.

As much as possible, live in peace…but know where the line will be drawn for you when you are asked to compromise what you believe.

Pray for strength in the day when you have to take a stand for your faith.

There is more…I am sure..but you get the point…

God says it so much better than me…

<3 Really LOVE people, don’t just pretend (and real love…doesn’t mean free to be you and me…it means I want GOD’S best for each person…but it also means realizing only GOD can work His best in each one of us and I am not the Holy Spirit)

<3 Hate what is evil; cling to what is good

<3 Show kind affection in brotherly love towards others

<3 Give preference to others and show honor and respect to them; don’t be demanding that things go the way you want them to go

<3 Don’t be lazy but work with diligence as if everything you do…no matter how trivial or mundane it may seem…is being done in service to the LORD

<3 Be patient as you wait out trials, pray a lot…and be thankful in advance, knowing God is at work and His works are GOOD

<3 Help people out, have people over, be nice

<3 If someone is mean to you or mistreats you BECAUSE YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN…don’t curse him…don’t wish evil on him…PRAY blessing on him…think of all the things you would pray for someone you love and pray that for that person.

<3 Don’t prioritize the importance of people based on their status, but count it a privilege to work with whoever is alongside you

<3 Come alongside people, cry with them when they are sad; laugh and celebrate when they are happy

<3 Don’t quarrel with people. As much as possible…be at peace with others

<3 Let God take revenge…let God bring justice…let God be God

<3 Let HIM determine where the line will be drawn and then hold fast to Him, not the line.

                                                                                          from Romans 12:9-21

You know what?

THAT I can understand.

It isn’t easy…but it is things I CAN do..with God’s help.

It is a place to expend energy in my realm of influence where I really can make a difference.

Each and every day.

Maybe if we just took one at a time…and prayed for God to help us DO the thing…

maybe we would see God make things….

great …

IMG_2439

sorry…couldn’t resist <3

Just thankful for kindness <3

19F98ADE-137F-48D8-8E68-2F0576D9D2DD

So we made a quick trip to Austin to help…

IMG_3180

this one move.

I wasn’t sure how well I would do 3 days post surgery…but very thankful for zero pain and the kindness of my  husband, our son…

and several attendants…

the TSA…seriously…

IMG_3133

they were so nice to me.

As well as the many strangers who offered sympathetic, if slightly sappy, smiles to me wherever I went whether walking, riding or…

IMG_3164putt-putting along.

It was an interesting and humbling and eye-opening experience.

I told the kids I hadn’t felt this much love from the public since I was pregnant with John and toting two kids around …. he said both times we were helping him change locations…=0)

Most of the kindness I encountered was an example of people doing their jobs with servant hearts.

I was helpless and they responded.

I was grateful and they were encouraged.

Not a bad way to do life every day…

IMG_3204

God bless you as give and RECEIVE acts of kindness today  <3

The “R” Word…and why it’s not popular

IMG_9077

All kinds of R‘s…there’s us…the Reimer’s

And there’s Rest and Relaxation which I guess I have had just about enough of because really…

there is only so much me-time I can take…

and then there’s that word that starts with R that causes all kinds of controversy if you bring it up.

IMG_8631

Inside or outside of the Christian church these days, the word “Repent” is a volatile topic or a non-issue….depending on where you land.

And here’s why.

The need to repent is based on the reality that we sin.

And talking about sin is offensive to people.

And goodness knows, we certainly don’t want to start offending people.

ESPECIALLY if we are Christians.

Or we don’t want to appear judgmental so we shy away from any conversation regarding sin and we focus on the warm fuzzy aspects of salvation, which I admit are a part of this Christian walk that I treasure deeply.

IMG_3554

Except while I have been laid up here I have been feeding a weary spirit on God’s Word.

And I have been camping out in the Gospels.

You know…the GOOD NEWS chapters.

And here is what Jesus says.

Jesus: who never sinned and healed and forgave and ministered and delivered.

Jesus: who ate with sinners and pharisees and talked about the Kingdom of God and showed us how to love and how to live.

Jesus:  who began and continued His earthly ministry preaching…

Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven has come…” Matthew 4:17

His preaching was a preaching of repentance… to turn from evil/from our natural bent toward choosing wrong…and turn to God/relying on His Spirit in us to guide us into choosing right.

056

I am not here to point out sin.

I understand that.

God already has.

Repentance is agreeing with Him that what He calls sin, I call sin.

It is admitting I have the old nature of sin still being worked out of me.

It is confessing when I realize that I am…

embracing

harboring

protecting

rationalizing

analyzing

cherishing

excusing

renaming

prioritizing…

or in any way continuing on with the practice of something that He clearly has outlined as sin.

And it is turning away from that and turning towards God.

IMG_2488

It is not popular.

It is offensive.

It is the absolute Right thing to do.

I pray that God would convict us and that we would Respond with Repentance.
