The Light of the World

Not a candle…

or even the orb of the sun…

but rather the radiation light…

He IS …. L I G H T

Our third week of studying how Jesus revealed Himself to us was as the Light of the World.

As I prepared for our lesson I found this word “light” is the Greek word phos.

It means to shine or make manifest especially by rays…

Our kids used to call them “Jesus Rays”…when the sun radiates down through the clouds.

When light can be almost “seen”.

Light ….

that makes things happen…IMG_6433

heat and warmth and energy and chemical changes…

that causes photosynthesis and growth

And this God who IS Light….

wraps Himself in it, of all things…like a garment….IMG_0914

who does that…who can put on LIGHT… as if it were a jacket?

And He calls us out of darkness…

and He says we are partakers of LIGHT

and that..

That the darkness only serves to allow us to shine brighter…always reflecting…

God bless you today as you shine <3

Planes, trains and automobiles ….

I considered titling this post…..

“I thought you fell off the face of the earth”

because it seems like forever since I have posted a real post.

And today will be just a random collection of the last 36 hours of us trying to get home…

with long waits in airports…

changed plans…

delays and cancelations…

But there were tender mercies ….

And we are safely home after checking in on…

and Joely Bear….

Who apparently thinks his Papi hung the moon…

I am with you Joel…I think he did too <3

Have a blessed weekend!

See you on Monday <3

There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home…

IMG_9596Russ and I are headed home today and the weather has taken a decided down-turn from the prediction from a few days ago…

because we were counting on it being around 40 and instead they are talking about…

But that’s ok.

Cause it’s home.

It’s where our people are and where life is lived out.

So we eagerly are packing up suitcases and praying the snow doesn’t keep us from making connections and getting to have Chick Fil A with ….

and if we have to shovel snow…

IMG_5592bring it on. Cause that’s just part of the Midwest and home and it’s worth every scoop to be there.

I promise I will have a deeper thought for tomorrow…and I am sure some kind of goofy thing is sure to happen between now and then…but keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we ….

journey onward toward home <3

Off my game…for sure

With the combination of weekend travel and finally succumbing to whatever germs have been flying around those three little cuties that I can’t resist smooching…I was too foggy headed on Monday to come up with a post.

Maybe you didn’t miss it…but I missed checking in here with you and since I didn’t offer up any thoughts, I did one better and just prayed for you all.

Today’s is really not my own thoughts but they are so good I can’t NOT share…

For Lent our church is doing a Tuesday and Thursday phone text with a passage to meditate and pray. It is based on a devotional practice called “Lectio Divina” or Sacred Reading. (You can get those by texting the phrase “firstdecatur” to the number 245-87)

The first one we were sent was from John 1:1-5.

The verse that jumped out at me was verse 5

And the light shines in the darkness; and the darkness did not comprehend it.

The Bible I have been using is a NKJV study Bible with notes from Jack Hayford and others. I don’t know who to give credit to for the following, but it is from the notes on this particular passage.

It blessed and encouraged me and so I am sharing with you:

The word comprehend is capable of three translations.

My bible notes gave the translation and then provided a sentence for each as an example:

To seize: The darkness does not gain control of light

To lay hold of, to perceive, attain, lay hold of with the mind, to apprehend with mental and moral effort: The darkness is unreceptive and doesn’t understand the light

To quench, extinguish, snuff out the light by stifling it, overcome: The darkness will never be able to eliminate the light

As I meditate on those three meanings and phrases, I am given much to consider.

A few thoughts come to mind like…

Yay!!! on points one and three. This is encouraging and it is uplifting and it is something to hang on tightly to.

But point two makes me really stop a minute and think about how conflict between those who walk in the light and those who walk in darkness is inevitable.

There is no common ground when dealing with a mind and spirit that is not able to perceive or apprehend with mental and moral effort the ways of walking in the light.

As you read through those translations of comprehend and substitute the different words in to the Scripture, what jumps out at you?

That is what meditation is.

Slowly reading the passage with intention and letting God speak to you.

Listening with intention.

Then using those thoughts to communicate with God through prayer.

I hope you are taking time this season of preparation for Easter to do just that very thing.

God bless you today as you grow closer to Him by reading and thinking on His Word <3

Because it’s Friday…

I spent yesterday remembering what it is like to be at home with three small children and how totally exhausting it can be when they tag team you on naps…

and the power is off so the laundry sits in murky water and the crock pot is useless.

How helpful 2 year olds are…

and sometimes the only way a four year old can be at peace is ….

How babies don’t come with velcro so you have to hold them in just the right way which means you have to hold your body in the strangest positions to adapt to whatever is going on in their little tummies to help keep the milk INSIDE them…

and so on this Friday I just want to shout out to all you young parents out there and say…

Hang in there…it may seem like today is lasting an ever-loving eternity, but believe it or not..

some day you will wish for just an hour or two with your little one on your lap…or eavesdropping on the chatter going on back in those car seats…

but just an hour or two…which is why grandparenting ….

is a pretty sweet gig.

God bless you this weekend with whatever lights up your world…I pray you have abundant joy in the midst of your ordinary life and that your heart will be filled with the knowledge of your Father’s love for you through His Son Jesus Christ.

Is it nap time yet?
