Just a fun one for Monday <3

It’s a beautifully sunny Monday here on the prairie and I just have a funny story to share as I embark on a mile long list of to do’s.

My tale begins with me noticing and liking a look that involves white casual tennis shoes worn with jeans or joggers. Hang with me…this isn’t a fashion blog. Yet.

I was telling Russ I was on the search for such sneakers, as they are called. As we were in various stores, he would suggest we check what they had. I finally found what I was looking for at a DSW and now own a pair of very white shoes.

As I explained to my husband, I am not sure if I will capture the “look” because it may actually be the trim models and real life people I have seen wearing them that I am more interested in resembling. But we shall see.

In the meantime, I am wearing them around the house today to make sure they are comfortable and every time I look down at them I am reminded of another fashion unicorn I chased back in my younger years.

At that time, saddle oxfords had made a comeback with a vengeance. All my friends had gotten a pair at the local department store called Hub Frankel. It was a multilevel, family owned business that carried all the best of everything.

I talked endlessly about these shoes and begged my parents for a pair. My mother thought they were hideous. She had lived through that era when they made their first appearance and she was incredulous that any of us would want to wear these, in her eye, old fashioned shoes.

Well, my dad was the shopper in our family and he loved buying clothes for himself and the rest of us. So he went down to Hub Frankel and bought me a pair of saddle oxfords as a gift. However, my father was also a firm believer in – you get what you pay for, and quality matters.

So instead of the black rubber soled saddle oxfords all my friends had, I got a pair of legit cheerleader oxfords. Sturdy soles, real leather. Made to last, baby.

I was mortified.

These looked nothing like the carbon copy oxfords of all my friends…they were incredibly white and impossible to “scuff” as was the de rigueur of all my adolescent friends. All new oxfords were immediately scuffed along pavement to show a bit of wear on the toe.

My sturdy, sensible shoes resisted all such nonsense.

I wore them, of course, until it was okay to not. I never enjoyed them and never felt that cool-kid vibe I had sought so desperately.

So as I look at my new kicks, I ponder if I am attempting to grab at an elusive feel rather than something to get around in. The good news is they are comfortable and I do feel less like I am going for a run than running errands when wearing them.

Oh well….all is fair in love, war and fashion…

Blessings <3
