Two are better than one…<3

Goodness…I have let the week get away from me. Nothing in particular was going on, but I seem to have missed posting. And you know I don’t ever like to go too many days without checking in.

Today’s thought is the result of a three time occurrence of a theme within a short period of time. When this happens, I am certain God is speaking and so of course I want to share it with you.

On Monday morning at the bi-monthly prayer gathering for the Christian school where John attended and I recently did my sub stint, it came up that there may be a need for mentors for some of the high school kids.

We talked about a guy who had mentored a teen who was struggling at this same school a few years ago. The meetings were helpful in turning this young man around and he ended up going into the ministry.

As I pondered this, the following day at our weekly church service at one of the memory care facilities in town, I heard a similar set of circumstances.

This time our speaker was filling in for our regular guy and as he talked about Christian fellowship, he shared how the man who usually speaks had mentored him when he and his wife first started at our church.

Ironically, it was the same guy in both of these stories. This time instead of meeting a kid for lunch at the school, he asked this newcomer to our church for his phone number so they could go to lunch. He just reached out and befriended the man and in a simple way became a mentor to his faith walk.

The third instance is one even nearer and dearer to our hearts.

Our Graham gets picked up early every Tuesday morning to attend a Bible study that meets before school. I know there are several of his teammates that attend and it is led by one of the seniors.

The junior that picks him up was the recipient of an upper classman doing the same for him when he was a freshman. After being given rides and attending this group of other high schoolers meeting for study, prayer and fellowship, he determined that he would do the same when he was of driving age.

He decided our Graham was the one he had been praying about and we are so very grateful.

Of course everyone is praying in advance for who Graham might be able to do this for in a few years. Excuse me while I heave a deep sigh and wipe some tears that he will be driving.

Three very different situations, but all the same thought and goal. Someone intentionally looking for someone else to connect with and serve as a mentor by just building a relationship. Being willing to be inconvenienced, being purposeful in praying for God to lead, being present for a ride…a meal…a chat; this is a small thing that yields huge results.

I love all of it, but I lam convicted by the pre-meditated decision to invite, exchange numbers, risk rejection in order to make a connection in each of these situations.

I am convicted to ask God to show me who needs something that I have to give.

I am convicted to pray for discernment and expectation that I will find those people.

I pray for wisdom and courage to initiate the opportunity.

How much better our time is spent when we are actively seeking out who God has set in our path to come alongside for such a time as this.
